Poor Measure

Yesterday I discovered something that shouldn’t have been such a shock to me but it still was.

My different sets of measuring cups all seem to have a slightly different idea about what constitutes a quarter cup.

I probably never would have realized this if I hadn’t noticed that the math on my cereal portions wasn’t adding up. As I mentioned yesterday, this granola I received from Jennie is so good I have to portion out my half cup by actually measuring it as opposed to my usual eyeballing it method.

I’ve had five servings from this bag and it claims to have 10 1/2 cups servings. So I should have half left, right?

Now normally I would assume someone else ate it. But I know for damn sure that Will didn’t eat even a crumble. And I’ve been carefully measuring my own portions to ensure I don’t over serve like I often do.

So I pulled out the measuring cups and did some experimenting.

In the version that looked the smallest, I scooped 1/4 cup.

And then poured that cup into my usual.

It’s slight but there is a difference there. Based on this, I estimate that I may have been eating up to an extra 1/4 cup each morning this week. No wonder it was keeping me full so well.

I proceeded to dish out today’s serving with the small scoop, which I imagine is likely the correct one.

Like I’ve been doing all week, I had it over some defrosted berries with a pinch of ground flax, half a banana and some soy milk.

This still kept me full until lunch but I suspect that had to do with today’s office offering.

Apparently it’s National Donut Day. And after a bad night’s sleep (five hours maybe), that deep fried goodness sounded perfect.

I don’t think I’ve had a donut in ages! And I enjoyed every last bite of this indulgence.

Happy Friday all!

  1. I’ve noticed the same thing with my measuring cups! I have two sets and one serving looks much more generous than the other. I always thought it was just because they were shaped differently (round vs. scoop shape) but I’ll have to do what you did and see if there’s actually a big difference.
I wish they were all more uniform.
